Featured Presentation

I'm afraid I can't let you expand that log file, Dave!

Speaker: Max Vernon, Consultant

Summary: Ever been kept awake a night by the creeping feeling that your SQL Server Transaction Log might be starting to control you? In this talk, Max investigates what happened when a database he was responsible for took 20 hours to perform recovery after an unexpected restart. He shows what you can do to avoid that uncomfortable talk with your boss where you explain that he's just got to wait until the database comes online before the business can operate. SQL Server Transaction Log management is critical to a well-running and highly-available database. In this session we'll see how to size the transaction log appropriately and manage log file size growth to avoid having embarrassing moments when you can least afford them. You should know what a transaction log is and why you need one; Max will give a brief introduction to the transaction log, but will move on to cover technical aspects fairly quickly. The session is aimed at technical database administrators.

About Max: Max Vernon is a senior SQL Server consultant, top 10 contributor on StackExchange's DBA Q&A site, and founder of SQLServerScience.com. Max has worked in technical positions for the past 20 years, and is passionate about helping others learn and succeed with SQL Server, Visual Studio, and web technologies.
