SQL Server Plan Cache and Introduction to Query Store

Speaker: Michael DeFehr, Consultant MDD Solutions

Summary: You know that SQL Server compiles a query plan when you submit statements. You also know that plans are not always optimal. You’ve heard that SQL Server caches these plans so that it can re-use them without recompiling when you submit the same or similar statements. How does this work? What are some of the pitfalls? Is there a feature that is off by default but I can almost assure you should be on in your environment? Find out in this demo-packed intermediate session. I’m going to assume you’ve seen a query plan before and at least know the difference between seeks and scans. The session will focus primarily on the tradition plan cache, but we’ll save some time to take a look at SQL 2016’s query store and see how it can be a big help in this space.
